They were just tight enough to mess up your album covers, unlike the "real thing" that fit them perfectly. I don't know if the "store" ones are better now? I have been using a store bought "milk crate" for about a year and I agree that it is not as strong as the real thing. However, it seems to be holding up well enough for my needs. I use it primarily to hold a backpack while commuting to and from work. It has also worked well as a location to mount lights and reflective material.
