yeah, hayes mechs are crap. it was the same for me... the brakes would "slow" me down, but not stop me. i couldn't even get my self to endo jamming on the front - even with 4 fingers. just because of how bad they were, i relegated myself to dirtjumping only until i got my hydros. i just didn't feel safe trail riding with those brakes.
