Yeah, looking at it now, I understand why it won't work that way. If you don't tuck it into the bottom of the buckles, you can easily tighten them with one hand, because when you pull up, the serration doesn't hinder the movement of the strap, as you're pulling near-parallel to the edge, but when you let go of the strap, the edge digs in and prevents the strap from slipping. Whereas when you tuck it in, it faces down by default, and you're pulling it deeper into the serrated edge.

To test it for yourself, just try yanking one of the straps out of the bottom of the buckle, and pull the strap upwards. It should tighten down with almost no resistance. Then, loosen the straps and try pulling down instead. It won't budge. To loosen with one hand I just swat my hand down and away, like I was shooing away a small dog trying to hump my leg. Easy-peasy.
