Cheap and simple is your best bet. Don't get involved in all the fancy equipment discussions. The people who do that have been riding for a while and know which features are most important to them personally. That doesn't mean those features will be good for you.

Check craigs list, and go out and test ride them alot. Pick the one that feels best to you.
