I bought my sequoia in the summer of 1982 and still ride it every day. From your description it pretty much matches mine however I've never noticed a serial number anywhere on or near the bottom bracket. Can you be more specific as to where it's stamped? I recall they brought the model out earlier that year. Dark blue with with Sugino triple crankset and 27in wheels. The Tange labels are long gone but i remember that they had a rainbow color scheme; plus the words "special series touring.." rings a bell.
