While 165s aren't necessary to avoid pedal strike on a track with a track bike, they're necessary to avoid pedal strike on curbs and corners on a conversion due to the lower bb. This is all according to the armchair wisdom of bfssfg of course. If you've got em and don't need em they'll bring in more cash now than they should.
+1 Even with 165's on my San Jose I once had a nasty pedal strike while flying around a corner. Lifted the bike off the ground. I managed to keep the bike going, narrowly missing the far curb. Not a pleasant experience.
