for those with limited bike knowledge they can easily be a very very bad deal
I have seen thousands [not dozens, not hundreds, but thousands] of used buyers be disappointed beyond beleif by how much work their 'bargin' used bike needs. When you see a lady break into tears over spending $200 on a 'great barely used bike' that needs over $300 of work to work correctly and safely; you a feel for the real risk of buying used. [this happens on used cars, used motorcycles, and used bicycles all the time]
By the way; the bike you say is not worth $400 is sold in shops all over for over $600 [recall that the same factory builds many brands] Specs make the bike - not stickers
