I'm going to be living in Scotland for a period of time, and my life wouldn't be complete without my road bike. To what extent should the bike be disassembled for shipping? I probably will bring the bike to the LBS and have them pack it. I'm o.k. with basic maintenance, but I would not trust myself reassembling the thing if they took apart the headset, took off the shifters, etc.

The reason I'm asking is that I'll have to start doing some research now for LBS's in the area, and figure out if I can ship it directly to them, if the reassembly process is too intricate.

Anyone know if I could bring the bike directly on the airplane, without having to package it? I imagine it would be much more prone to damage that way.
