Nothing of what the OP has said indicates any fast riding on his part.
I'll tell you right now that a leisure cyclist given no more then six feet of distance between other cyclist traffic (regardless of traffic direction) will nail you as easily at 5 mph as they would if one was riding 15 mph.
All it takes is one chuckleheaded moron that doesn't bother to realize that the path isn't their own for
meandering entirely over it.
