The brifters offer less than crisp shifts and while going into high gears in fine unless you put the least amount of force on the crank while doing it. Shifting into low gears is a joke.
What you will get with 105 is an adequate group, nothing special.
If you are sniffing around that price range forget shimano, Campy veloce from PBK will serve you well with both price and function.
I haven't had any trouble with my Tiagra FD that is specific to Tiagra. I did need to readjust it as part of a scheduled tuneup, but other than that, the shifts have been seemless, reliable, and low maintenance.
