Great story.

I had just the opposite reaction at a local Wal-Mart, yet for the exact same reason...

Me: "Hi, I don't have a lock, can I bring my bike with me?"
Greeter: "We sell bikes here. Heck, kids tear around the store on the ones for sale, without buying them. I don't see a problem."
