Nah, we have this solved. We have no private discretionary funds. This spreads the responsiblity to spend wisely between both of us. So when she asks if she can go shopping for a new purse, I say "yes, no problem" if we have the money, and when I ask if I can buy new shoes she says "no". See how that works?

Sounds familiar. My wife lost weight and has been buying new clothes. No problem. My feet grew and I needed new cycling shoes, and my wife said "as long as it comes out of your fun money". At least she didn't ask me to use my fun money for my new sneakers or dress shoes, I guess.
