The bottle of tri-flow I've had for like five years has instructions on it that go something like this:

1. Clean the chain.
2. Shake the bottle well, and apply a small drop of lube to each link (I take this to mean the rollers)
3. Run the pedals a few revolutions and wipe off any excess.
