It's interesting to read all the responses saying why what the OP said does not apply to us. It's doubly interesting because this is, after all, the commuter forum, where the basic idea behind the OP's post, bikes as transportation, should be a no-brainer. I agree on the culture part. America as a whole does not foster cycling culture.
But I can't use his recommendations. For example, trying to make a chain last 10 years is "stretching it" a bit.
