I have a couple similar ride areas on my commute to work. I've only had a handful of jerks cus/yell/honk. Which means that 98% of people are at least tolerant. My Father is a very aggressive driver and used to swerve/honk/yell at cyclists. If I may be so bold, his issue had to do with accepting people that weren't "like him". Remember that anger is rarely a primary emotion, it is a secondary emotion often caused by hurt, fear, or injustice (although this is really just a form of fear and hurt)
A lot of people are afraid of others that are not like them. People have been having angry outbursts at others who are significantly different from well before any of us were born. These types also are more prone to feel possessive when driving. They are in Their car, on Their Road, In Their Lane, and you are in Their way, disrupting Their life. You are not going to reason with these people. I find the best tactic is to thank them and wish them a good day. They're usually expecting a fight. Be nice, Be kind, and they generally have no response and just drive away.
Stopped at a light
Crazy SUV driver: "get off the road you #@$@#$, or I'll $#%# run you over"
Me: "Thank you, have a nice day"
Crazy SUV driver: " " (blink, blink, drives off)
