I'm 5-10 around 90kg and am looking to cycle to work sometimes but also mess about at weekends with a little offroading (nothing too severe).
BeOne Aspire 1.0 2007

vs.
Mongoose Tyax Super 2008

(My main concerns are, should i compromise and go for mech. discs to get the beone as the forks and gearset are better - and i trust beone more than mongoose - or am I wrong in that assumption?)
Thanks

The rule of thumb is to buy the bike that fits you best. At the price point you're looking at, there will be very little difference between them in terms of what the components have to offer. What will make for a better ride is how comfortable you fit on the bike.
You've provided links to what appear to be online retailers. I've personally bought stuff from Chain Reaction Cycles in the past and am not aware of them having any retail outlets. What this means is that you are taking a chance buying a bike online without actually sitting on it. Have you ruled out visiting local bike shops to see the various offerings at the same price point from the likes of Trek, Specialized, Kona, etc?
In your situation that would be the first thing I'd look to do. You're more likely to find a bike you'll be very happy with this way.
