NEWBIE question, but this owned me just now

I was doing a 20 mile run around town just logging in my base miles on my new F80

I was just practicing w/ gear shifting which I'm still very new too and then all of a sudden my shifting went loose, I shifted the front gears from the smallest gear to the 2nd gear and the 2nd gear didn't catch... the chain got caught up on the frame and I had to get my hands dirty ... and it was rather embarassing too hehe.

So after a bit of fiddling w/ the chain and getting it loose (it got really tangled!) I was off on the road again.

Then low and behold I went from 1st to 2nd again on the front gear and the chain went off the rail...

This doesn't always happen when I go from 1 to 2, but it happened twice, am I doing something I'm not suppose too? I stop pedaling when I shift... and I'm not sure if whether it's the rear gears that I need to align?
