I don't think you have to worry--an aging population that hasn't taken great care of its self will ensure that pavement will be sticking around one way or another. Our elders do have a fair amount of wealth, and if it comes to it, they'll still figure out ways to drive. Plus, we'll still have big rigs around to deliver goods.
I think it's a great thing. Long overdue. Sure, I don't want to change my habits either, but as a trend it's a good thing. And, with less commuters hopefully roads will last longer and won't need as much widening. [Of course, most of the roads are already worn out.]
