ettsn, how do you know the bike shops didn't start carrying Trek b/c Trek is what they can sell? They are just as good as any other bike manufacturer with competitive prices and the bike shop customer recognizes the brand from all of the TDF hype. I suspect every bike shop makes its decisions based on its own circumstances, but main stream bike shops might be selling Treks b/c that's what the public wants to buy.
You missed my point. The shop I went in today has been selling Trek for years. They've also sold Specialized for years. And Haro. And whatever else they used to sell. Now it's
all gone except for Trek. Maybe it's their most popular brand, but it seems a little fishy to me.
