Being laughed at doesn't bother me - I'm married with a teenager daughter and 2 sons in their early 20's, so I've been getting laughed at for years!
Should everyone wear a helmet when they're riding a bike? My reaction would be that the decision should be left to the individual (at least for adults). I've made my decision; I put the helmet on whenever I get on my bike (or, more accurately, trike). Your decision is just that - yours to make, not mine.
