Chain should be cleaned and re-oiled every 100 or so miles or every week is a good bet, of course after rainy and dirty rides it could use some cleaning as well. Make sure the pullies are clean as well, they get gunk build up quick fast if you don't pay attention.

Spend some time with some degreaser and make sure your drive train is clean.
