I'm 39 years old. I raced sanctioned BMX back in the day; both ABA and NBL. I was around when BMX freestyle grew into a sport all its own. I watched with horror as the bike companies I knew and loved made bikes that had wacky attachments sprouting from every weld-able surface for these... "freestylers".

Eventually I came around and started experimenting with freestyle and found it cool. I did flatland stuff (nothing like what they're doing now), I rode quarter-pipes. But now? BMX freestyle is played out, IMHO.

Fixed gear freestyle, on the other hand and still IMHO, is not played out. Sure, the tricks are simplistic when compared to BMX freestyle, but it's new. It's fresh. The fact the tricks are done on a 700c "track" bike, again and still IMHO, puts a whole new spin on them.

When BMX freestyle was new, sticking a foot in your forks and doing a no-handed endo was cool. Now that's yawn-worthy at best. With fixed gear freestyle today, bar-spins are cool; I expect when fixed gear freestyle has been around as long as BMX freestyle has been around bar-spins will be yawn-worthy and there will be a whole new crop of tricks.

Again, all IMHO.
