Rim wear gauge?

Hello,
I've been searching the forums trying to find a subjective way to find out when I need to replace my rims. So far, the best (pretty much only) method I have seen is to feel the rims to see if they are concave. If so, the rims have noticable wear and may need to be replaced.

Is there any more "scientific" way to detect wear than this? What would the LBS do?

I'd like to think my rims in question have a wear gauge, but I don't think they do and I'm not sure who makes them. They came on my 2000 Giant Sedona so are likely inexpensive.

Thanks,
Jason
