Don't despair. The Raleigh Passage 3.0 I was wanting was under $300. Don't have to spend alot on a good bike. Nor, IMHO, should you. You"ll want to get another one, sexier maybe, when you become addicted to it!
I'm saving up for a Surly LHT. My GT will be used for in town duties then, or made into an Xtracycle.

I'm just a poor recent college grad anyways..... I'm not making serious loot with my job, and all I need is something where the wheels dont fall off and it moves when I pedal
however I still have not managed to test it out on any unpaved trails, maybe I'd have different thoughts then. right now I've been limited to a paved bike path
