I found it goes even further than this - skinny tires with a fixed gear was the most stable thing I've ridden all winter. The road condition feedback you get with a fixed wheel just can't be beat.

These days, whenever I have to ride my road bike around the city - or anything which allows for coasting - I'm startled at my own surprise of the seeming lack of control. Fixed gear simply owns when it comes to controlling speed...
