You misunderstood. It's not the cables, but the fact that the pads get thinner as they are worn, therefore you need to tighten the cables to move the pads closer to the rim again. That's what the adjusters on the brakes are for. Anyway, I've said it a million times before, but try SwissStop pads. They are more expensive than KoolStop, but they really are much better. I've descended over a million feet last year and 600K so far this year so far so I need my ***** to work. Pads > brakes. FWIW, I have the Yellow King pads.
I used to try and run my pads closed to my wheel I loved the feel but my rims flex so much when I climb and even sometimes on hard turns, I gave up. I ended up always looking down to see if my wheels were rubbing.
