The Garmin Forerunners use GPS for elevation, which is not very accurate. The errors accumulate when you calculate cumulative elevation gain, so that is much less accurate than a bike computer with a barometric altimeter. Note that some of the Garmin Edge bike computers do have a barometric altimeter.
