How could the driver not have seen him? Bike lanes are a possible culprit. The picture makes this look like a major intersection. If it was 26th and not 27th (which appears unlikley because Powell and 27th don't meet according to Mapquest, Yahoo and Microsoft Streets), then the 26th Street bike lane may have been at fault. See this map of bike lanes in SE Portland.

Portland has created a series of mandatory death alleys for cyclists to ride in. Cyclists can get cited for not using them. The idea is to keep us out of the stream of traffic. One of the risks of keeping us out of traffic is that cars don't see us at intersections. This guy may have paid the price for Portland's bike lane lunacy.

Edit: We were right. This was not 27th and Powell. It was 26th and Powell. See this article from another local station.
