Luckily, for me, there are plenty of alt's to the truck/industrial routes. I've made the mistake of going down some of those only to find out later that the next street had a bike lane. The other thing I did starting out was be too cautious and add 30 -45 min. to the already long commute by taking what I thought would be the least populated road. Going out isn't bad at all, but coming back that road is pretty dang busy. But after many a recon ride, I'm on the MUP for at least 60% of the ride and have bike lanes on most of the other roads except the last leg in.
As as far as "bad" neighborhoods go, there really aren't any I wouldn't want to be caught in on my commute.
