There in lies your problem. Cable tension is a major part in how well your bike shifts.
Tiagra shifters are fine. My old touring bike had them for many many miles. I think it was flattened by a SUV around 9000 miles.

Agree.
I rode a Bianchi Volpe for 5 years on my daily commute, rain, snow, etc, minor tiagra adjustments along the way, no problems.
