My primary commuter bike has Nitto moustache bars with Shimano 8 speed bar end shifters. I use a 7 speed 13-32 cassette on the rear hub, so the shifters are really only changing 7 cogs on the back. The bar ends are just in back of my wrist, so to push down I simply slide my wrist back on the bars and press down. If I need to pull up on the shift lever, I slide the wrist back and move the lever up with my 2 smallest fingers. My 14 mile commute each way has about 1200' elevation loss and about the same amount of gain, so I am almost always in rolling terrain. I am not a shiftaholic, but I do use the full range of my rear cassette while riding, and move from large to middle chain ring several times during my ride. I like the simplicity and durability of the Shimano bar end shifters.
