I don't know what is causing that but I would not be surprised if it is oil related. I imagine that there would be a lot of machinery and energy used in the mining and production of it.
Refining Aluminum is massively expensive. It requires tons of electricity. Recycling aluminum is considerable cheaper, which is why there is always market for cans.
