WD-40 or kerosene in a jug, drop the chain in, shake all the crud out. Take the chain out, wipe it down and use a brush with the same cleaner (either WD-40 or kerosene). Then re-install and lube up with raceline wax.
Works wonders.
Pretty much what I do except I use aviation gasoline (100LL) as a solvent to clean since it's free.
I'll repeat the process of the shaking the chain in a pickle jar several times since the first or second time doesn't always get it 100% clean. And then of course air dry in the sun to make sure all the solvent is completely gone.
I like how wax keeps my chain clean for weeks.
