What sucks here is a poorly drafted and unjust piece of legislation that incorrectly assigns blame to the cyclist.

The door zone that we refer to here on the forum is a term created among cyclists - it is not a universally known traffic term.

As others have pointed out, had the motorist opened his door into a passing automobile, the blame would have been placed with the 'driver' of the parked car, not upon the passing motorist. Where I live, it is the responsibility of the driver opening his door on the traffic side of the street who is responsible not to interfere with passing traffic.

I predict that Wisconsin (or Madison as appropriate) will deal with this deficiency in their traffic code.

It surprises me to find attitudes like yours on a bike forum, especially in A&S.
