Reminds me of my pleasure ride this weekend, I took a route I don't usually take. I rode across a bridge and was picking up speed on the descent when I noticed an expansion joint that had many gaps that nearly paralleled my path that were wider than my tires (and I ride 27 x 1 & 1/4). I had visions of doing what you did. It is one of my biggest fears.
