Bikes: My own hand built frames

I hate to reply to my own thread, but I'm going to anyway.

So I rode today on the Roubaix wearing a backpack. That sucked. I also looked at some Surly's, a Bianchi Volpe, and a Fuji Comp-Cross. The Surly's look the best, but by the time I get some 105/Ultegra components and a rack with bags on there it is more money than I really want to spend. The Volpe looked nice and is a bit cheaper, but has Tiagra components. Does anyone have experience riding 30-40 miles a day on rough roads with one of these? Durability and reliability are my main concerns in a commuter bike. I liked the Fuji Comp-Cross bikes, but they were at Performance and I have a problem buying anything other than simple accesories from Performance.

Any opinions are welcome. Thanks
