I found that my flatter Coca-Cola crate was more versatile for what I normally carry (not usually pumpkins). I made 3 fresh apple pies the other day and brought them to work intact... the crate gives me the space to carry stuff flatter than in a milk crate. I tie-wrapped the crate to my rack and use a stretchy cargo net over top.
That's a pretty sweet set-up. Actually my main problem is the rack. I've got a cheaper Avenir rack that is a little too small, as in heel strike with every bag/basket that I've got right now. Not to mention the rubbing of the 'seat meat' when using a crate.
I'm going to convince my wife that I need a more expensive rack. Something that will allow me to attach panniers at a point lower than the main deck of the rack.
