I agree. I do many of the repairs myself...except truing wheels. For some reason that whole concept escapes me. Anything else and I can do it myself or rely on help from a Sheldon Brown article.
Just taught my son how to true his own wheels... what a thrill... passing on the ancient art to my progeny.
Really it isn't that hard to learn... it just takes patience and a good "reference," be it a bike frame or a truing stand. Also... baby steps... do it with small adjustments and verify the results.
