Statistics have nothing to do with it. He has a real experience that could be analyzed. Granted, it is unlikely that he will do so, but the only thing that would support or negate his statement would be an analysis of the damage done to the helmet, deduction of the forces required to do the damage, and modeling of those forces on the unprotected human head.

Statistics are never true in individual cases. One can argue how true they are in aggregate, as well.
