We did two tours of France before we moved here for a couple years.. We would concentrate on one area.. Then jump ahead and do some riding in a new area. One tour we did about 1000 Km.. In Normandy and the Loire. As important as cycle touring is.. Make a couple non tour days and see the sights and take in the sounds and smells. Our longer tour, the non cyclists pulled a sag in a rented car and we meet that night in a pre-determined spot.. It worked out just fine.. The sag car carried all our stuff, which is how we like to tour.
