Most LEDs, from my understanding need some sort of current regulation, otherwise they will find a way to burn themselves out....so it would be a good idea to use the "mystery circuit".

BTW, I tihnk those keychain LEDs, are actually ran with a rather weak battery so they cannot kill themselves.
