Get the fork mount trays. You likely won't have the same problem again.
As to the bike bras, they have saved me a considerable amount of bug goo rammed into various small parts, but they do cost you in a few MPG and are not very durable. The two I've had were essentially a piece of spandex with a few velcro straps. Worth it under select circumstances, IME.
