It is estimated that power will drop to about 700 horsepower compared to the 1,000 horsepower that existing engines will reach by 2006.
In order not to prejudice the smaller independent teams, the existing 3-liter V10 engines may continue to be used in 2006 and 2007, subject to a restriction on revs to be determined by the FIA. Having reduced engine power, there is a need for an inexpensive but competitive engine for the smaller independent teams, including newcomers. A rev-limited 3-liter V10 can be adjusted to be competitive with factory 2.4-liter V8 units but will be far less costly."
I think the point is that reducing costs does level the playing field.
Sigh. With regards to engines ONLY, a change in engine formula doesn't level anything. It was level to begin with. If all teams can only run say 2 litre v4's. They are going to run 2 litre v4's, how the hell is that not level. That is
my point.
Cost cutting to level the playing field? that's another issue.
