I've kind of been on hiatus this summer in regards to building bikes - just got tired of it for a while. Yesterday, I happened to browse the local CL, and came up with a pair of his n' hers Peugeot's within a mile of my house. A couple of garage queens, they were dirty and grimy, but show little wear. I had to pull the RD's on both, and de-gunk them as they were frozen in place by a gooey mixture of dust, grease, and whatever else that stuck to them while hanging in the rafters for 25 years.
1984 is stamped on the dérailleurs and hubs, so that's what I'm going with. Lower end to be sure and made out of Carbolite 103 tubing, but a nice pair nonetheless. I had to give $150 for the pair, but will make that back easliy on the mixte.
The man's model has a peculiar problem with the rear wheel. Two non-drive side spokes are very loose, but the wheel is true. If I tension them properly, the wheel goes out of true. Unfortunately, the opposing drive-side spokes are frozen in their nipples, so I can't adjust the wobble out that way. And since the stupid French used Helocomatic on this one, I can't remove the freewheel and replace the spokes. Tomorrow I'll pull the tire/tube and see if I can't get the nipples ut via a sloted screwdriver, and replace them. If not, I'm screwed until I find a replacement wheel.
Anyway, take a look:
