27" tires seem to have been less susceptible to manufacturer size exaggerations. Most of my 27 1&1/4 tires fell into the 31-32mm range. The advantage of big tires is they perform well in the 60-80psi range.

Rock hard sounds too high. At 80psi you should be able to squeeze the sidewalls and feel a little give. Try someone else's gauge.
