Yeah, compression plug works by pressing against the inside of the steerer while the cap pulls down from the top. The starfangled nut would have destroyed your fork with the first whack to get it in place.

You can use the compression plug you have and it should work fine. I have a CK headset and use a problem solvers compression plug with my carbon steerer.
