I used an old 110/74 BCD MTB triple as compact double for my 1986 road bike (was 42-53). I didn't even need to change the bottom bracket. I did get new rings and went with 34-50. I also got some loose cogs for the freewheel from
www.loosescrews.com and rebuilt it as a 13-30 (was 13-21).
