I only try to keep up with traffic when riding downtown. It's easier and safer just to claim the lane here. And no one is really able to go very fast. The blocks are short and nearly every intersection has a light or stop sign.

Otherwise, I usually stick to roads that are wide enough to allow traffic to pass me with ease. Springfield has a system of designated bike routes that identify these roads.
