I gave up on carrying large bottles in cages a long time ago. I tried a number of cages with extra-tall bottles and regularly stopped to pick up bottles--and this wasn't even while riding off-road, it was just hitting bumps in paved streets.

Also..... the aluminum bottles dent when they hit the ground, where the plastic bottles just bounce around a bit and are still good.
