it's just friction shifting on this bike. It originally was a 6 spd freewheel on a 27" wheel but I'm converting to 700c wheels (which originally had the 7 spd freewheel on them) but would like to use the 34t 6spd freewheel that I just picked up for $7 on clist.
For not much more than that, you can get a Shimano 14-34 7spd free wheel.
